1964 “R” code Galaxie 500
This is the Legendary Ford Magazine project car known as “Big Red”. Less than 100 miles since a complete frame off restoration that was fully documented. This is not a museum piece or “numbers matching” car. I saved it from a basket case and restored it to be a great driver that appears stock but has modern upgrades to it’s power train, suspension and brakes.
The car was built Dec. 1963 at the Twin Cities Assembly plant and sold through the Southern Ill. Sales region. The build sheet for the car is included along with extensive 1964 Ford sales documentation.
The suspension and steering have been rebuilt with upgraded bushings, Monroe Matic shocks and aftermarket heavy duty front sway bar. It has four wheel disc brakes and radial tires mounted on 7.5” wide Police car wheels with OE dog dish caps.
The engine is the legendary 425 horsepower 427 that has been totally rebuilt and balanced. It is based on a 1967 side oiler cylinder block bored .030 with custom Diamond forged pistons (10.5 to 1 compression, runs on pump gas) on reconditioned 427 low riser connecting rods with ARP bolts. The crank shaft is forged steel OE Ford .010-.010. Camshaft and kit is a Comp Cams solid lifter with specifications similar to 427 Medium riser. Cylinder heads are rebuilt C3AE-H with medium riser stainless steel size valves. Heads are port matched to correct C3AE low riser two four barrel aluminum intake with rebuilt and re-plated C3AE Holley carburetors. Ignition is an electronic conversion of OE Ford dual point distributor. Charging system has been upgraded with one wire chrome alternator. Cooling is handled by an aluminum water pump, seven blade clutch fan and Griffin aluminum radiator, all of which add greatly to the car’s road worthiness.
The rest of the drive train consists of a Centerforce flywheel and clutch assembly in a Lakewood bell housing. The transmission is a newly rebuilt big in-big out top loader four speed with a Hurst shifter. Differential is the OE 4.11 open rear.
A custom exhaust system with three chamber Flow Master mufflers, balance tube and old school cutouts exits in the stock location and sounds great.
The body has been professionally painted in the OE color of Rangoon red using two stage paint. Stainless and aluminum trim has been professionally restored and bumpers have been re-chromed.
The interior is all new red vinyl reproduction by Auto Krafters and is as roomy and comfortable as it is correct appearing. A Classic Auto Sound am/fm cassette radio fits in the stock location.
This is an opportunity to own a real “R” code 427 Galaxie in eye catching Rangoon red that runs, sounds and drives great that will turn heads wherever it goes.
